Mahalaxmi Temple
It is one of the three and half Shakti peethas of Maharashtra where God Vishnu and Laxmi lives for ever. Kolhapur has been named after the demon Kolhasur, who was killed by the Laxmi Goddess.
The temple was first built in the 7th century. It belongs architecturally to the Chalukya period.
In the year (1712–1792) in Sambhajee Raje Reign, Narhar Bhat Shastree had a dream which he told to him that in the Mughal reign, the devotees had hidden the idol for protection from destruction. Sambhajee started a search. This idol was found in one of the house in a Market in the city. In one of his letter Sambhaji mentioned that Sindhoji Ghorpade of Panhala installed the idol again on September 26, 1712. It was Monday, Ashwin the festival of Vijiya Dashami.
The number of devotees grew, and in due course of time, the Devi became the Deity of Maharashtra.Due to the abhishekas the idol was eroding day by day. So Sankeshwar Shankaracharya got it repaired by vajralep. In 1954 it was again installed at the hands of Kolhapur Shahajee Raje. There are 5 main temples and 7 Deepamalas. Around the temple there are 35 temples of various sizes. There are 5 tops of Hemadpanthi style and a Garud Mandap.

The Rankala Lake is a very famous tourist attraction for people from all over the world. The lake was built by Shri Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the king of Kolhapur. The lake has Rajghat and Marathghat as the two ghats. The lake covers an area of as large as 107 hectares. The Rankala Lake is a place of peaceful and calm beauty further mystified with various legends. This Lake has a circumference of nearly 4.5 miles. On its west lies the regal Shalini palace and on its east is the Padma Raje gardens. The Rankala lake has a very interesting history dating back to the days of Shri Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj.
It is believed that the Rankala Lake is not a real natural lake and it was built by Shri Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj. Locals believe that the lake is connected to a well that is in Panhala fort. It is also said that Shivaji Maharaj used this tunnel to cross over to Panhala fort.
It is believed that there was Rankabhairav temple which is submerged in the lake. The Rankabhairav temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There is a temple at the side of the Rankala Lake which has a statue of Shiva’s ‘vahan’ Nandi. According to the legend, Lord Shiva uses Nandi for travelling and thus this statue of Nandi moves towards the direction of the lake by the distance of one wheat grain every day and comes back to its original position. It is believed that the world will come to an end when the statue of Nandi reaches up to the lake.
Apart from the inherent natural beauty and the regal beauty of the Shalini palace and the Padma Raje gardens, the Lake also offers a host of activities to keep tourists entertained. Tourists can enjoy Horseback riding and boating. There are various food stalls along the lake which serve delicious snacks at reasonable prices. The banks of the lake are well-maintained with seating arrangements and picturesque gardens.
Jyotiba Temple
Of twelve Jyotirlingas this is one of the temple. This is also known as Kedarnath and Wadi According to Hindu Mythological Story, Jotiba helped Mahalaxmi in her fight with the demons. Namely the Ratnasur. He founded his kingdom on this mountain. He belongs to the Nath cult. This God is avtaar of Guard (Bhairav). Jyotiba is believed to be an incarnation of three main Gods, namely Mahesh, Vishnu and Brahma. Jotiba killed demon Ratnasur with the help of Mahalakshmi, due to this incidence name of village was named Wadi Ratnagiri. As it is a long name public accepted this place in the name of God ‘Jotiba’ instead.
Jyotiba Temple is situated at a distance of about 24 km from Kolhapur to the North and is located at an elevation of about 3,100 ft above sea level.
The original temple named Kedarnath was built by Navaji saya. Ranoji Shinde built the present temple in 1730 in its place. Second temple of kedareshwar was built by Daulatrao Shinde in 1808. Third temple of Ramling was constructed by Malji Panhalkar in 1780. The interior is ancient and the idol is four-handed. There are other temples and Light-towers or ‘Dip-malas’ in the premises.
On Chaitra Purnima there is a big fair held, when lakhs of devotees come with tall sticks called as Sasan sticks. The process of sprinkling of ‘Gulal’ the holy pink powder, whole mountain is turned pink.
Decorated, colourful bamboo sticks called as SASAN KATHI is attraction of this fair. There are more than 2000 Sasan kathies. Sequence of these sticks is traditional. People from various parts of the state and country take part in this procession.
In addition to this fair there are some other celebrations in temple. Sunday is a preferable visiting day by devotees so it is a crowded. People from local areas visit other week days except Sunday. Palkhi procession is carried out on the full moon day.
There is another Temple of ‘Yamai’ Goddess on the northern part of hill. She is sister of Jotiba.
Sunday is sacred to Jotiba. In the last few years much improvement has been made by the people and on the government level. A new Plaza Garden has been undertaken by the Government.
PANHALA

While at Panhala it is a must visit to the Ambarkhana. It was built by the Marathas and houses different sections such as the administrative section, the palace, the mint, and the grainary. Names of the granaries are Ganga, Jamuna, and Saraswati, and could store as much as 25,000 khandis of grain. Since the soil was not suitable for cultivation, the provisions had to be made for stock. There one can see the Teen Darwaja i.e. the three important gates to gain access to the fort.
Sajja Kothi
Sajja Kothi that was built by the Mohammedans in 1008 AD is another major attraction at Panhala. The story goes thus. In the famous encounter of Shivaji, ‘Escape from Panhalgad’, Siddi Johar, surrounded Panhala, he fooled the general by escaping from the window of Sajja Kothi. Shiva Kashid, The brave stalwart was disguised as Shivaji coped with the rage of the siddhi.

Someshwar tank
One can see Someshwar tank also. The tank was formed due to the unearthing of stones that were required for the construction of the fort wall. The Nayakini Sajja
The Nayakini Sajja at Panhala demonstrates the wise warfare strategy used by the Marathas to fool the enemies. The Nayakini Sajja has been very strategically located near one of the corners of the fort to camouflage a deep valley in between.If the enemies attacked from that corner, they would actually climb over the simulated corner of the fort to acquire the Nayakini Sajja and in the venture fall into the deep valley.
